Mold spores are not visible with the naked eye. One of the best ways to determine if a structure has high levels of mold is through air sampling. Air samples are analyzed by a lab and can help determine the severity of a mold problem.
Air samples are taken though a pump which is attached to special cartridges which are specifically designed to catch mold spores. The cartridges are sent off to be analyzed by a laboratory.
Apparent surface mold growth can also be tested. The inspector will take a sample of the substance. The sample will then be set off to analyzed by a laboratory.
A mold assessment includes: An inspection of the structure for conditions conducive to mold growth, and for apparent mold growth. Sampling (air, surface, or both) are taken by the inspector and are sent off to the Laboratory for analysis. The base fee of $295.00 for one structure includes three samples and all associated lab fees. Additional samples may be requested. The fee for additional samples is $75.00 which includes all associated lab fees.
Q: What is Mold?
A: Molds are part of the natural environment. Mold can be found on just about every organic material. Lightweight mold spores can be spread by air currents. Once they land on a suitable surface they can begin to grow. To thrive, mold requires water, organic material, oxygen and an optimum temperature between 40 and 90 degree Fahrenheit. Mold growth is often visible due to a discoloration of the surface material. Common colors include: white, orange, pink, blue, green, brown, and black.
Mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present. Indoor mold can be controlled by controlling moisture.
